CALIFORNIA STATE FIRE TRAINING
California State Fire Training (SFT), a division of the Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) within CAL FIRE, is the cornerstone of the state’s professional development for fire and emergency service personnel. Its mission is to reduce the costs of suffering and property loss by establishing minimum performance standards and providing standardized training and education programs across California.
Overview and Mission
Established under the California Fire Service Training and Education Program (FSTEP) Act, SFT oversees a comprehensive system of training and certification. While the SFT division does not own all training facilities or directly operate every course, it accredits academic institutions and fire agencies to deliver standardized training, ensuring continuity and alignment with state and national standards.
Key functions of California State Fire Training include:
- Setting minimum performance standards and identifying required tasks for certification.
- Maintaining comprehensive records of training achievements through the SFT User Portal.
- Aligning California’s certification standards with both state and national programs, including the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards.
- Producing continuing education and topic-specific training courses through the Fire Service Training and Education Program (FSTEP).
Professional Certifications
California State Fire Training offers a wide array of professional certifications, which are vital for career progression within the fire service. These certifications are part of the California Fire Service Training and Education System (CFSTES) and include:
Fire Fighter 1 & 2: The foundational certifications in the state’s professional firefighter series, with the 2024 edition of the standard recently implemented.
Company Officer & Chief Fire Officer: Progressive certifications that cover human resources management, administrative functions, and all-risk command operations, culminating in the capstone Chief Fire Officer program.
Specialized Roles: Certifications for specific roles such as Fire Investigator, Fire and Emergency Services Instructor, Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator, and others.
Modern Initiatives and Impact
California has significantly increased investment in wildfire prevention and resilience efforts, and California State Fire Training programs are central to these initiatives. Recent developments highlight the system’s responsiveness to the state’s evolving needs:
Record Training: The state recently celebrated the graduation of a record number of new CAL FIRE officers, a direct result of investments in new training facilities and programs.
Wildfire Preparedness: Training programs now include specific modules on defensible space assessment and home hardening, crucial for protecting communities in fire-prone areas.
Mutual Aid:Ā California has joined the Northwest Wildland Fire Fighting Compact, expanding mutual aid partnerships, which relies on the standardized training provided by SFT to ensure seamless coordination across agencies.
Through standardized curriculum and accredited academies, California State Fire Training equips personnel with the necessary skills and knowledge to safeguard the people, property, and resources of California.
